The Natural
Based on the novel by Bernard Malamud and directed by Barry Levinson, The Natural follows country–raised Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) as he attempts to make it in the Big League as a pitcher. Though his attempt is interrupted, he redefines himself as a power hitter and leads his team into contention, despite the usual — and not so usual — obstacles. Strong supporting cast features Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Wilford Brimley and Richard Farnsworth.
ClearPlay In Action!
There is at least one jaw—dropping surprise in The Natural that could upset the kids. In a later part of the movie, the protagonist is in pain from a bloody wound in his side. Aside from brief bits of violence, extortion, other shady dealings, minor sensuality and ballpark language, all fielded handily by ClearPlay, The Natural is family friendly.
Is The Natural a great American Hero?…
As constructed by Malamud, The Natural is one part myth, two parts parable, and all over–the–top fun. There is little restraint in story–telling, as The Natural forgoes bunts and continually swings for the fences (charmed baseball bats, ripping the cover off the ball, exploding ballpark lights), and though it was never fully satisfying emotionally for me, it made me smile. A lot.
