  • Couples Retreat

Four couples seeking sun and solace on a beautiful paradisaical island…the one catch being that they have to spend a few hours each day in couple’s therapy. As the eight islanders swim, bask in the sun, and talk about their relationships, they’ll learn a lot about themselves and their marriage. And whether they can weather the island storm of marital bliss.

    ClearPlay In Action!

My ClearPlayer had quite a job to perform with Couples Retreat. The film doesn’t contain tons of expletives (only several S-words are cleared) it’s more about the lewd behavior of the 4 couples! Particularly once they arrive on the island, every girl in sight is wearing some sort of a skimpy bikini, and the male yoga instructor wears a very small Speedo. This same yogi shows up in one scene in the nude with only a strategically placed flower to cover up his downstairs. The last part of the movie, the couples find the “Singles” half of the island where there is inappropriate music, scantily dressed young single adults, and indecent dancing. With all of this in mind and the fact that most of the conversation centers around adult content, I would recommend this film for ages 17+.

Is Couples Retreat a real treat to watch?

This movie is one meant for those who can tolerate a certain type of humor. Vince Vaughan and John Favreau are fast-talking comedians who both have scripted punch lines meant only for older teens and adults. Jason Bateman is 100% his hilarious self and I honestly own the movie because of him, he’s brilliant. The content focuses mostly on the complications of marriage and though some of the characters’ parts are off-color, I like that the group supports each other and isn’t afraid to tell their friends that they need to clean up their act and put forth more effort. Couples Retreat does have a solid moral of a story, just goes through a low code of morals to get to it!

    Couples Retreat

A couple having marital problems (Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell) invite three other couples with them (including stars Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman) to an island couples retreat in order to obtain a group rate. When they get there, they find that the relationship building exercises aren’t optional, and learn that they, too, have much to improve in their seemingly normal relationships.

    The ClearPlay Factor

Couples Retreat is loaded with sexual humor and references. The ClearPlayed version eliminates 90+ instances of language, as well as several scenes of implied intercourse, self-stimulation and suggestive actions. ClearPlay viewers get to avoid the movie’s sophomoric attempts at shocking the audience, though there are still lots of scantily clad bodies enjoying the island atmosphere.

Should I advance to the rental outlet, or simply Retreat?…

Let’s face it, Couples Retreat isn’t a very good movie. But at least on ClearPlay, it isn’t also offensive, not exactly a ringing endorsement. There are a few nice laughs, beautiful locales and a couple of interesting situations regarding marital difficulties. But these are quickly shoved aside for easy solutions and homey sentiments. It might please die-hard Vince Vaughn fans, but others may need to head to the nearest Club Med to recover.
