  • Tweens & Teens Movie Night Activity: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

    “Yup. You’re a demi-god!”

Percy Jackson thinks he’s just a regular guy experiencing the ups and downs of high school and home life. He’s extremely surprised when he finds out that he’s actually a demi-god, the son of a Greek god and a mortal. When Percy is accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning his friend Grover, a satyr, and some others they meet along the way, all help Percy learn what he’s really made of. Gather up your older kids and their friends to watch this show and enjoy some Movie Night Activities as well. Not sure if this movie is right for your family then check out the review below.

    Wear While Watching:

*Dress up like your favorite Greek gods or goddesses. There are many, many to choose from. You could choose to copy one from the movie or do a little research and find one that they don’t mention. You could focus on a specific accessory like winged shoes or snake hair, or go all out with a whole costume.
*Suit up in your best battle gear. You could split up into sides and have two teams with specific colors to wear, or even use kids dress-up amour to look like the kids learning to fight at Camp.

    Home Theater Décor:

*Mr. Brunner gives Percy a pen and says “Take this to defend yourself. It's a powerful weapon. Guard it well. Only use it in times of severe distress.” At first Percy thinks it’s just a pen, but later finds out it’s actually a sword. Decorate your movie watching area with different styles of writing utensils and weapons, or have a pen or two to give out as Movie Night favors.
*Because Percy is the son of the God of the Sea, stick to sea and Oceana décor. Use seas shells, tridents and other nautical items to decorate so that Poseidon himself would feel at home.

    Movie Munchies:

*Have a barbeque or bonfire cookout like they have in training camp. Be sure to have plenty of meat like roast pig (or hotdogs, those are suitable for movie watching mortals) and have your drinks in goblets. You could even decorate plastic cups with fake gems to make them look more goblet-like.
*Grover tries to help himself to some free soda from Auntie Em’s garden shop, but he doesn’t find soda there. Keep your guests from being disappointed by having some real free soda for them to enjoy while they watch the show.
*When Percy, Grover and Annabeth fight the Hydra, Grover finds out that it has a sweet tooth. Satisfy your Movie Night guest’s sweet tooth, by having multiply sweet treats available for them to snack on while they watch the show. And speaking of sweet treats, go the extra mile and make some Lotus Flower Cookies but beware… they could make everyone want to have movie night every night!

    Movie Inspired Adventures:

*When the movie begins, it shows Percy sitting at the bottom of a pool for quite some time. Turns out he can hold his breath for a very long time because he’s Poseidon’s son. You could go swimming as part of your Movie Night Activities, and let everyone get in touch with their inner Poseidon.
*From looking for 3 pearls to finding the missing lightning and the thief who took it, this movie is all about finding things. Have your own movie inspired scavenger hunt by breaking into teams or having each person look for random objects. You could make a list of items that have significance in the movie (like a pen or a pearl) or just choose some other items that would be fun to try and collect. See who can gather the items the fastest.
*This movie is actually based on a book from a 5 part collection by Rick Riordan. Read the books that inspired the movie and be sure to check out the 2nd movie, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, in theaters now.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

There’s trouble in Greek paradise as ordinary kid Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) learns he is a descendant of the gods and embarks on an adventure to save his mom and restore peace to the planet. Along with sidekicks Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), Percy fights all sorts of effects-laden monsters to complete his quest.

    The ClearPlay Factor

You would think the PG-rated Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief would already be family-ready. Nevertheless, there are a dozen or so profanities accompanied by some lewd jokes and scatological references that are cut in the ClearPlayed version. ClearPlay’s main work here is with the violence, which borders on the PG-13. Beheadings, swordplay, some suggestive comments at a party scene – all will make you thankful for ClearPlay. There’s still lots of fighting, which is kind of the point of the movie.

Is Percy Jackson nectar from the gods?…

Percy Jackson is a special-effects adventure after the manner of Harry Potter, but without the charm. There are some fun elements – Mt. Olympus atop the Empire State Building, a trip to Hades, winged tennis shoes – but the lead characters seem a bit lackluster. Fans of the popular book series on which the movie’s based may also take exception to the changes. Otherwise, it’s an okay actioner.
