Investigating the escape of an insane murderess from Shutter Island’s asylum, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) have seemingly entered a maze fraught with dead ends, hidden dangers and no clear-cut path to the solution. Daniels’ own agenda – to find the deranged arsonist who killed his wife – clashes with his professional duties. Throw into the mix nefarious doctors (Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow), a heavy police presence, secret hospital wings, a sinister lighthouse, and an approaching hurricane, and Shutter Island starts feeling like the death camp that haunts Daniels’ memories.

ClearPlay handily cleans up about 50 instances of profanity, suggestive conversations, nude patients, and lots of disturbing, bloody imagery. But at its core, Shutter Island is about an insane woman who drowned her children, something that’s talked about in the film and shown in flashback, and this point alone renders the edited version inappropriate for young viewers.

With director Martin Scorsese at the helm, Shutter Island is a wonderful mind game, full of twists and turns that might have you questioning your own sanity. Fun performances, a labyrinthine plot and spooky milieu are best suited for audience members whose tastes lean toward the bizarre. For optimal enjoyment, watch it twice.
