A Simple matter of Saving The World

“Do you want to be my girlfriend? Check Yes or No.” A simple note written to a girl that required a simple answer. But before Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) is able to see the response, the wind inconspicuously carries the note to an old antique store run by modern day sorcerer Balthazar (Nicholas Cage). As Dave enters the store he knows his life is about to change as he discovers his true destiny is magic, and saving the world.

ClearPlay In Action!

Just a couple of expletives edited out of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and no need to worry about any sex or nudity. The main theme in this film is magic so there aren’t scenes that include lots of guns, swords, or fist fighting. However, there are several scenes throughout the movie that include throwing balls of lightning at each other and one pretty intense scene including a giant dragon creating havoc and chaos in its chase for Dave. A clean family flic that may be mostly magical for ages 12 and up.

Will the Sorcerer cast a spell on you?...

This isn’t a movie that slowly builds and builds and then explodes in some magnificent conclusion. From the gates, the action begins explaining the story, the problem, and the solution. So it’s fun because you get to watch and just enjoy, and as a bonus, it’s easy enough to follow so even your youngsters stay enticed. A fun twist on Merlin and I especially love that this movie includes the moral of believing in yourself, even if you are different from everyone else.

For centuries untold, Balthazar the master sorcerer has searched for the one who will replace the mighty Merlin who was killed by the evil Morgana. At last he encounters Dave, a nerdy and brilliant student physicist whom he desperately tries to train before the evil Horvath can free Morgana from her prison and help her destroy the world.

ClearPlay In Action!

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a very family friendly film. ClearPlay trims out a few religious exclamations and a couple of mild obscenities. The violence in the film is bloodless and primarily consists of people and objects being tossed around by magic. There is no sexuality or nudity. This film is appropriate for most, though a couple of scenes might be a bit intense and scary for the very young.

Should I Become this Sorcerer’s Apprentice?…

The virtues of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice are its family friendliness and fun magical effects. Nicolas Cage, who plays Balthazar, and Jay Baruchel (who voiced Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon) provide some funny moments, too. While I ultimately wished the film had a bit more meat on its bones and took fewer trips to the cheese trough, it is an entertaining movie to watch with the family.
