True Grit

Tom Chaney done killed Mattie Ross’s Pa. But Mattie ain’t no milksop of girl that’s gonna set down in a pile of weeds and weep till the cows come home. She heads to town to hire the meanest, orneriest lawman west of the east, Rooster Cogburn, to hunt down Tom Chaney so she can plant him six feet under.

No sex or nudity in this one. There’s a little bit of cussin’ of the lesser variety. Violence and disturbing images are ClearPlay’s main work. There are a couple of brutal parts that will cause some gaps if you have filters on full, including a dis–fingerment, hangings, and some bloody gun wounds. If you don’t like corpses (old ones or new ones), this isn’t the film for you. Older teens and up.

Is this Too Gritty for me?…

While the acting is excellent everywhere, Jeff Bridges as the irascible Rooster Cogburn carries this film. He’s terrifying, hilarious, likeable, and deplorable all at once. The cinematography will immerse you in the wilderness of the old west, and the sense of danger and uncertainty keeps your hands on your pistol butts throughout. Be warned that this is a gritty old west with hangings, shootings, and stabbings, so don’t expect Little House on the Prairie. If you like True Grit, you might try out 3:10 to Yuma, another excellent western, or the 1969 version of True Grit starring John Wayne.
