Rise of the Planet of the Apes

In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, James Franco plays Will Rodman, a scientist trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s. His experiments lead him to a drug that increases intelligence in apes, but the experiments are halted when erratic ape behavior embarrasses the company. Rodman rescues the youngest test subject Caesar (Andy Serkis), an ape with whom he develops a tight bond. Their relationship, for all intents and purposes, leads to disastrous results.

There are fewer than 20 words cut by ClearPlay, and no scenes of sex or nudity. The true finessing of ClearPlay in this terrific thriller is through trimming of violence and potentially disturbing images. The stakes are high in this film, and the animals are cute until they’re pushed too far. Although most kids will love this movie, the scenes of animal cruelty and scary plot developments throughout could invoke nightmares in the under–teenage crowd.

Isn’t Rise just a lot of monkey business?…

Once in a while, a movie comes along to revitalize a stale series, and that’s exactly what Rise of the Planet of the Apes does. Cool special effects, a story with characters who actually elicit our sympathies, a topical message … they’re all here, along with an exhilarating plot and several homages to the first Planet of the Apes. You may or may not be as enthusiastic; I went bananas.
