  • Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

In this sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, Josh Hutcherson reprises his role as Sean, this time trying to track down the mysterious island on which he believes his grandfather (Michael Caine) is a castaway. His step–dad (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) helps him decipher a distress message and accompanies him on the adventure, first to Palau, then to the fantasy island populated with creatures big and small. Vanessa Hudgens and Luis Guzman are along for the ride.

    ClearPlay In Action!

Journey 2 received its PG rating mostly for adventure action, but ClearPlay cleans up some potty references, and about 10 mild profanities. Fine for the kids. In fact, maybe fine only for the kids.

Is Mysterious Island worth the journey?…

“What?” you say. “Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island ISN’T a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth.” You’re right, but Journey 2 cobbles together story elements as an excuse for an adventure yarn that plays so broadly, it’s hard to take any of the thrills seriously. Younger members of the family will probably like it — and sometimes that’s enough. The acting panders to the lowest common denominator, and the movie has too many “important lines of dialogue” and CGI effects that look slightly less convincing than your average Pixar movie. If all you want to do is have a couple of laughs with the kids, you’ll have an okay time.

Rated PG for some adventure action, and brief mild language; 94 min; Directed by Brad Peyton
