  • The Pirates! Band of Misfits

Fans of claymation favorites Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run should set sail for The Pirates! Band of Misfits, a satire about Pirate Captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) who has a dream to become Pirate of the Year. His efforts are fruitless (scurvily so) until he meets up with Charles Darwin and finds out he has priceless booty on board. However, cashing in proves to be more difficult than walking the plank.

    ClearPlay In Action!

With jokes flying faster than a peg–legged parrot, there are bound to be some bawdy moments. ClearPlay cleans up the rude and crude references, and around 10 mild profanities. The remainder is family friendly, and a rare instance where parents may find it funnier than kids do.

Will Pirates make me shake my booty?…

The dry wit and droll humor of Pirates! will not make everybody laugh. But I found the images of pirates behaving in decidedly un–pirate-like fashion to be hil–Arrr–ious. The idea of a bloodthirsty lot yearning for approval, and celebrating things like “ham nite,” well, it worked for me. If their target was my funny bone, X marked the spot.

Family Movie Night Activity: The Pirates! Band of Misfits

Join the Pirate Captain and his band of misfits as they try to earn the Pirate of the Year award. Turns out it’s more of an adventure than they bargained for! You and your family can have an adventure too with this Family Movie Night Activity!

*You’ll find out from the beginning that the best part of being a Pirate is Ham Night of course! So to truly get into the spirit of movie night with this one prepare some delicious ham and serve it at your kitchen table with a banner hanging above you that says Ham Nite! (Misspelling is a must).
*Your pirate Ham night can be made complete with some family friendly grog using Cream Soda or just whatever juice you have around the house mixed up with some Sprite.
*At the very beginning we see Queen Victoria with quite the spread of a royal dinner. Instead of a Pirate dinner you could have the Queen’s feast with chicken drum sticks and juice in fancy glasses.
*For movie snacks you can have popcorn in classic red and white striped containers and soda with straws just like the pirates do when watching their Captain at the Science Fair.

    Must Pause Moments:

*If your family decides to dress up like Pirates for the movie then pause the movie after all the Captains have made their entrances to the Pirate of the Year sign ups. Let each kid (and parent) make their own dramatic entrance into the movie room with as much Pirate Pizzaz as they can muster.
*The Pirate Captain has the best and most tricky hiding spot for Polly the dodo. Find some kind of your own bird and play a game of hide the dodo. Everyone gets a turn to hide the bird somewhere on their person and then everyone else tries to guess where it is.
*When the pirates are taking an adventurous ride in the bathtub pause the flick to see how many family members you can fit in your families’ smallest bathtub.

*The Pirate Captain has a Wanted Sign with some silly reward items on it. Before movie night make some Wanted signs. Take school pictures of each of your kids and put them up on a Wanted sign with some fun made up rewards on the bottom.
*This movie has some of the funniest and most fun maps you’ve ever seen. During the movie or after let everyone make some of their own fun treasure maps complete with wind blowing cherubs, sea monsters and mermaids.
*“Neptune’s Lips!” During the movie count how many different Greek-God body parts the Pirate Captain exclaims when he’s surprised.
*The Pirate Captain can’t sleep without some familiar sea noises so he asks Number Two to make nautical noises for him. Find some nautical noises to play softly in the background during your dinner or through the whole movie, or just at bedtime.
*Sometime after the movie you might want to do a vinegar and baking soda experiment with the kids so they understand that whole phenomenon that happens a couple of times in the movie. Just mix a small amount of the two together and they’ll get the idea.
