Hope Springs
In Hope Springs, Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) are a married couple in the autumn of their relationship. Arnold seems content with their rut of a routine, but Kay is tormented by Arnold’s indifference. It prompts Kay to withdraw her savings and plan a vacation retreat run by a therapist (Steve Carell), in an attempt to pull them out of the morass their marriage has become.
ClearPlay In Action!
Though there are only about 15 instances of profanity cleaned up by ClearPlay, there is a mountain of frank sexual talk that gets the axe, particularly during the therapy scenes. In addition, the ClearPlayed version cuts several scenes of sensuality. The movie handles a married relationship in a mature manner, and would hold little interest for younger audiences. In this case, “younger” may mean anyone under 30.
Will I watch Hope Springs ‘til death do us part?…
There are some very interesting ideas broached in Hope Springs, with a thoughtful script and usual stand–out performances by the leads. While there may be an overemphasis on the central couple’s physical relationship, there is satisfaction in seeing the all–too–realistic sparring of these venerable veterans.
