Promised Land
Steve Butler (Matt Damon) and Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), are two high-powered but charming representatives of Global, a natural gas company looking to buy up land in a farming community for excavation purposes. It seems to be a slam dunk – the farmers need money and Global is offering a lot – but the company meets some unexpected resistance from savvy townsfolk and an environmental activist (John Krasinski).
ClearPlay In Action!
ClearPlay cuts about 90 instances of profanity from the R-rated Promised Land, many in isolated scenes. The ClearPlayed version is appropriate for most audiences, though younger viewers may need explanations for the complicated issues. The movie has an environmental bent, but the main message has to do with standing up for what you believe is right.
Is Promised Land manna from heaven?...
Directed by Gus Van Sant, Promised Land boasts an intelligent script with some terrific dialogue, memorable characters (Hal Holbrook has a brief but pivotal role), and a sure-handed style that is leisurely and sincere. The dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, are singled out, but more importantly, the movie is about human nature, and that’s where it shines. Damon and McDormand show once again why they are at the top of their craft.
