Broken City
In Broken City, Mark Wahlberg plays Billy Taggart, a cop bailed out of a police shooting/murder charge by a mayor (Russell Crowe) who believes in the political advantage of heroes. Seven years later, the mayor calls in a favor of Taggart, now working as a two’bit private detective: “Follow my wife and see who she’s having an affair with.” Taggart agrees, and the trail leads to corrupt business deals, sneaky campaign tactics, murder, and other secrets that never really pay off.
ClearPlay In Action!
Two scenes of sensuality/nudity are cut from the ClearPlayed version, as well as talk of sexuality and infidelity. Some violence is trimmed, and more than 100 instances of profanity are excised, most of them the F’word. The movie deals with many negative aspects of society; save it for older teens.
Does Broken City need fixing?…
I love Mark Wahlberg and think his presence helps many lesser movies. He doesn’t help much here. Broken City has a muddled story that brings in more subplots than it needs, diffusing the main conflicts. If you haven’t seen many noir–ish gritty cop flicks, this one may seem new, but mostly it has a “been there, done that” feel.
