Cloud Atlas
What do an 1800s ocean voyage, a classical composer, a 1970s power plant scandal, an escape from a present-day rest home, a futuristic Korean clone, and a post-apocalyptic Hawaii have in common? You may still be trying to answer that question after seeing Cloud Atlas, an ambitious and sprawling tale based on the David Mitchell novel. Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, James Broadbent, Hugo Weaving and many others, each play multiple roles in the disparate storylines that are intercut continually to draw thematic parallels.
ClearPlay In Action!
Several scenes involving nudity, gruesome violence, and implied intercourse are trimmed in the ClearPlayed version of Cloud Atlas, including: a man splatting on the ground after a high drop, throats being slashed, naked bodies hung from meat hooks, and many other unsavory images. ClearPlay also cuts about 55 instances of profanity. Because of the serious nature of several of the plots, even the ClearPlayed Cloud Atlas may be too intense for all but mature viewers.
Will I need an Atlas to find my way through this movie?...
Unlike most movie experiences you’ve ever had, Cloud Atlas pushes the boundaries of narrative storytelling by traipsing through different time periods at the rate of about 12 times a sentence. Whether the approach works or not is debatable, but the movie’s design and images are often spellbinding. If you’re feeling adventurous, give it a try.
