Beautiful Creatures
Ethan is a smart, charming and very stuck southern boy who desperately longs to escape his small home town. He’s also plagued with dreams he can’t understand about a young woman he can’t really see. But when Lena moves into town, his small town problems may be the least of his worries. Now he’ll have to deal with dark secrets, a curse, and a past as strange as Lena is herself.
ClearPlay in Action!
At least 6 instances of the “B” word and a handful of other milder-side expletives are filtered. Three or four passionate kissing scenes are cut and one or two mildly intense/disturbing scenes. What you will see is a female caster, who dresses seductively with some cleavage and one scene with a dress that looks like it might be see through but I couldn’t tell for certain. The issue you’ll want to be aware of here is the theme of witch craft, or spell casting. Often in the movie the mean girls in school accuse Lena and her uncle of being Satan worshipers. Then of course there are instances of spells being cast and weird things happening. I never felt uncomfortable about any of the spells but you might want to keep this one as viewed only by your teens 13 and up.
Will Beautiful Creatures Cast a Spell on You?...
I think performances from Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis and the ever perfect Emma Thompson really helped pull this film along. Our leading man, Alden Ehrenreich, was so natural and charming with his thick southern accent that he really stole the show. The effects were a little silly and some of the spells a little…weird, but I was entertained. Will this be my next DVD library purchase? Of course not. Will I ever deliberately watch this movie again? Certainly not. But, was I entertained with minimal eye rolling and able to keep the husband in the room with zero whining and complaining about his lot in life as the spouse of a movie reviewer? You bet! So if you’ve got teens who’ve read the book then flip your filters to Medium or Most and humor them for a night. You won’t be completely miserable.
