42
Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), forward-thinking General Manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers, signs Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) of the popular Negro League to play for his team, breaking baseball’s color barrier and changing the sport – and the world – forever. The movie 42 chronicles the prejudices, threats and dangers Robinson faces from fans, the establishment and his own teammates, as the first African American to play Major League Baseball.
ClearPlay In Action!
There are upwards of 50 racial epithets in 42, and many instances of racial injustice. ClearPlay cuts nearly 40 profanities, more than 40 N-words, and some suggestive comments. The movie spends more time on the personal drama than on game action, so its appeal is for sports fans and non-sports fans alike. Its inspirational story is appropriate for all members of the family.
Does 42 hit a home run or strike out?...
Well acted, well directed, with a screenplay that’s intelligent, 42 does a great job recreating the intimidating, intolerant world of the late 1940s. The film stands in the upper echelon of sports movies, as tall as Robinson stands as an American hero.
