The Company You Keep
When a radical militant (Susan Sarandon) from the 1960s is apprehended by the FBI, a journalist (Shia LaBeouf) sees an opportunity to advance his career by digging deeper into the intrigue. His search uncovers a legitimate lawyer (Robert Redford) whose secret past is linked to an underground group that may have been responsible for a three–decades–old killing that occurred during a bank robbery.
ClearPlay In Action!
The ‘60s may conjure up images of sex and violence, but there’s no such thing in this movie. While the story alludes to the bank robbery gone wrong, it uses surveillance footage to show the crime, and no details are visible. ClearPlay cuts about 60 instances of language, including 15 F–words. The movie may be hard to follow for younger audiences, but it could instigate some interesting conversations about responsibility and consequences of one’s actions.
Is Company a keeper?…
Director Redford has a deft touch around drama. The story is solid if not exciting, interesting if not action–packed. It’s a tad slow at times, but the performances are strong, and the story is intricate. Although it’s no All the President’s Men, The Company You Keep is a nice puzzle to be solved.
