The Great Gatsby
In the 2013 reboot of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic novel The Great Gatsby, Tobey Maguire plays Nick Carroway, the everyday Joe who moves in next door to the enigmatic Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). Nick is drawn to his neighbor’s fabulous parties, and gets entangled in Gatsby’s secret relationship with Nick’s married cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan). The story turns the American Dream inside-out, and does so against the backdrop of the Roaring ’20s.
ClearPlay In Action!
The language is mostly above-board in the PG-13 Gatsby, with about 20 instances cut in the ClearPlayed version, many of them references to infidelity. Implied sexual encounters and some violent moments are also trimmed. The movie is still best suited to mature audiences due to the nature of the many relationship infidelities.
Is this adaptation of Gatsby a great one?...
I mentioned some of the movie’s stars above, but the real star, and the one that keeps commanding the most attention, is director Baz Luhrmann. His take on Gatsby is full of glitz, glamour, music, and fluff, a visual explosion that leaves little else once the smoke clears. It’s fun to look at, but you may have trouble feeling anything for the characters.
