The Bling Ring
Marc (Israel Broussard), the new kid at the high school, finds a friend in Rebecca (Katie Chang). Bored with her upper middle class life, Rebecca encourages Marc to accompany her into other people’s houses and cars to rob them. Their gang expands and so do the stakes as they begin casing celebrity homes and stealing high class bling. Based on a true story, and also stars Emma Watson.
ClearPlay In Action!
Although ClearPlay cuts partial nudity, lewdness and more than 70 profanities, the story is still about amoral sociopaths who party, carouse and take what’s not theirs. The movie stresses an obsession with celebrity, and there is really no counterbalance to the bad behavior. Whether they get a comeuppance or not is immaterial as the film tends to glamorize crime. Keep impressionable kids away.
Is The Bling Ring king, or just a spring fling?...
Director Sofia Coppola is often edgy and provocative, and The Bling Ring is an artistic achievement. I just feel it’s a little too short on illumination and a sympathetic protagonist to give it a recommendation. If you want to see kids behaving badly, this is your movie. If you want a spotlight on the human condition, you can complain that ClearPlay doesn’t cut about an hour more of the movie.
