Fourteen-year-old Duncan (Liam James) is dragged along for the summer to be with his mom (Toni Collette) and her boyfriend (Steve Carell) to a beachside house. Despite the entourage of colorful neighbors (Allison Janney, Rob Corddry, Amanda Peet, AnnaSophia Robb), Duncan feels neglected by his mom and belittled by her boyfriend and seeks to feel valued. He finds that affirmation at a local water park, and by the side of grownup water park employee Owen (Sam Rockwell).

    ClearPlay In Action!

As you might expect from a coming-of-age summer, there are lewd references, off-color jokes, skimpy bathing suits, and about 70 profanities that ClearPlay handily cuts. There is still family disharmony that might make younger viewers uncomfortable. Some viewers also might raise an eyebrow at the idea that the boy is befriended by an older man. But the overall message of building self-esteem is ultimately positive and powerful.

Is this a rental I should bring Way, Way Back to my home theatre?...

The Way, Way Back is a sly, funny look at adolescence, and Sam Rockwell’s scene-stealing performance by itself is worth the price of the rental. Liam James feels like an ordinary kid – not your typical spunky movie teen waiting to turn on the charm – and that adds to the movie’s authentic feel.

    Marty Nabhan - ClearPlay Lifeguard

Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, language, some sexual content and brief drug material; 105 min; Directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash
