Tom Clancy’s character Jack Ryan has been the hero of several feature films: The Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, and The Sum of All Fears. Now played by Chris Pine in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a young Ryan is recruited by the CIA for his analytic skills and Marine background. He follows the lead of some strange financial goings-on, and finds evidence of a Russian plot to commit a terrorist act within the United States and destroy the U.S. economy.

    ClearPlay In Action!

There is a small smattering of language cleaned up by ClearPlay in Shadow Recruit, about 16 instances that include one F-word. The violence is largely bloodless, but is intense, and some is trimmed for its severity. The action scenes could be too disturbing for younger viewers.

Does the movie Shadow Recruit know jack about spying?...

There are a couple of great moments in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Chris Pine is affable, Keira Knightley as Ryan’s love interest is wonderful, and Kevin Costner is solid if a little bland. The movie is directed by the film’s villain, Kenneth Branagh, and the film works on the strength of its set pieces. The plot is overly-complicated, but enough info is doled out for the layman to follow the good guys and have a good time. In the end, what you CIA is what you get.
