  • Joe

Joe (Nicholas Cage), an ex-con who’s rough around the edges, lives in a small rural town. While working in a forestry job tagging trees for destruction, he meets Gary (Tye Sheridan), a young teen drifter who’s hard worker and victim of an abusive father. Joe struggles between his urge to help the youth by getting involved or maintaining his neutrality and letting things work themselves out.

    ClearPlay In Action!

Joe earned its R-rating in three categories: 1) While sporadic, intense profanity punctuates several scenes; 2) sexual situations include Joe’s interaction with a house of prostitution; and 3) surprising scenes of violence that include shootings, bludgeoning, dog fighting and tending to wounds. The ClearPlayed version of Joe is free of these things, but the mature themes of the film such as abuse and lawlessness, gear the film toward an older audience.

Is this film just an ordinary Joe?...

Although the movie is slow moving, there is a constant feeling of dread that hovers below the surface of Joe. The performances are all strong, with many of the scenes directed with realistic naturalism. Joe hearkens back to director David Gordon Green’s debut film George Washington. Though it won’t appeal to all viewers due to its rambling nature and ambivalence toward retribution, the movie certainly falls in the category of one of the good Nicholas Cage movies.
