In the future, a rigid caste system is in place that separates all people into various groups based on virtues. Tris (Shailene Woodley) reaches the age to choose her group, and picks "Dauntless", even though her parents are from another. But what Tris has learned, what testing has shown her, is that she actually possesses the characteristics of many groups, and hence, is a Divergent. Divergents, as it turns out, are deemed dangerous to society, and Tris must protect her secret or be killed. Based on the popular YA novel.

    ClearPlay In Action!

There are some violent situations in Divergent, with some bloodshed, in addition to about 10 instances of dialogue and an implied attempted rape, and ClearPlay handles these moments admirably. As there are many life-and-death scenes in this movie, you may want to shield younger viewers from its content.

What classification should Divergent fall into?...

Though the Divergent series of books have received their criticisms, the movie does a nice job of portraying this future world, with its various factions. Tris is a nice counterpoint to The Hunger Games' Katniss, as she moves from the Abnegation clan to embody all things Dauntless. All in all, she's a good Everygirl who becomes what she needs become to survive in this grave new world.

    Marty Nabhan - ClearPlay Erudite

Rated PG-13 for intense violence and action, thematic elements and some sensuality; 139 mins; Directed by Neil Burger
