How to Train Your Dragon 2
In the first installment of dragon training, young Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) tamed the dread dragon Toothless and rescued his Viking clan from their fear of the fire-breathing beasts. Five years later, Hiccup is just as reckless as ever, and while exploring with Toothless, he discovers an angry band of Vikings led by the evil Drago (Djimon Hounnsou) who are bent on attacking Hiccup’s clan with their own army of dragons. In the process, Hiccup makes a life-changing discovery.
ClearPlay In Action!
ClearPlay cleans up a religious exclamation or two, as well as scene of crude humor involving regurgitation. Even ClearPlayed, the dragons and villains may be too scary for younger viewers. But as far as theme goes, the old favorites are still on display: peace, the value of life, and the importance of family. There is also very positive messaging about dealing with disabilities.
Does the story soar, or is it simply draggin’?...
Good news: Dragon 2 is outstanding. While maybe not as intriguing as the original, there are plots twists and amazing animation around every bend. The plea for humane treatment of dragons sometimes gets heavy-handed, but the stunning visuals made me wish I’d seen this sequel in 3-D as I did the original.
