A Most Wanted Man
Gunther Bachmann (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his team of counter- terrorists vigilantly monitor suspicious behavior in Hamburg in the post -9/11 world. Red flags alert them when a Muslim from Russia (Grigoriy Dobrygin) appears, heir to a terrorist father’s fortune. Gunther and team work quickly to first interrogate the banker (Willem Dafoe) holding the money, then to the young lawyer (Rachel McAdams) who is protecting the potential terrorist. Their urgency is prompted by the devastation of a possible attack, and the aggressive nature of the Americans’ efforts to apprehend the same man.
ClearPlay In Action!
Despite the espionage themes, there is surprisingly little sex and violence in A Most Wanted Man. Sporadic strong language throughout the movie give ClearPlay the workout. Although the edited movie is fine for most audiences, younger viewers may be concerned with the good guys’ tactics, or simply bored from lack of action.
Will this Man be a ‘most wanted’ rental?...
Based on a John Le Carre novel, this is certainly not cinema’s answer to 24. The pace is deliberate, the thrills internal, and performances, including Hoffman in his last complete role, spectacular. You will either be mesmerized by the machinations of tedious spy work, or looking frequently at your watch.
