  • The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner begins in shocking fashion, with a teenage boy (Dylan O’Brien) finding himself in the “Glade,” a pastoral location surrounded by huge walls and populated by other boys. Seemingly the only way out is through a giant gate that closes each night. Though the gate is open during the day, the challenge is that it’s the entrance to an elaborate maze that features horrible monsters and walls that change. The newcomer quickly earns a position as “maze runner,” a fast boy who seeks an escape from the Glade.

    ClearPlay In Action!

There’s not much language for ClearPlay to cut – approximately 20 instances – but the violence in the movie pushes the PG-13 limit. Though ClearPlay trims the blood and disturbing images, there are still scary scenes that will likely affect young viewers. It’s best for teens and above, with a positive message about the power of an individual.

Will I be twisting and turning to find a way out of this Maze?...

Based on a young adult series, The Maze Runner is another in a line of like-minded movies (The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Giver) that present a dystopian vision of the future with teens leading the way to social order. For my money, I enjoyed The Maze Runner more than the others. It has good pacing, exciting scenes, and though it suffers from a Book-One open-ended finale, it still felt like it had a distinct beginning, middle and end.
