Boyhood
There are certainly movies out there that span many years and follow a character who ages during the film, usually through the use of makeup and costuming. But there is nothing like Boyhood, Richard Linklater’s movie about a young boy, Mason (Ellar Coltrane), who grows up before our eyes. Filmed over a 12-year period with the same cast members (including Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents), we see Mason go from first grade to college in this 2 hour and 45 minute movie.
ClearPlay In Action!
Mason is an ordinary kid and he does things many kids do. ClearPlay trims a scene where kids look at a catalog with underwear models, where they search porn on the internet, get promiscuous, and use drugs and bad language. About 100 instances of language are cut, including 40 or so F-words. The ClearPlayed version still has some upsetting scenes involving alcohol, abuse and family arguments, and the movie is best suited for mature viewers.
“Will I have great memories of Boyhood?...”
Boyhood is an amazing accomplishment, a long movie where nothing remarkable happens, but where the overall effect amounts to more than its individual parts. If you’re lookingfor a plot-driven story, look elsewhere. But if you want a cinematic experience unlike anything else, Boyhood may well be the best movie of the year.
