In the tradition of Walk the Line and Ray, Get On Up is the musical bio-pic of a music legend and his rise to the top. James Brown (played by Chadwick Boseman) begins life in poverty with an abusive parent, but driven by his inner funk, uses his talent to eventually becomes the Godfather of Soul. The movie is presented in non-linear fashion, jumping back and forth between concert performances and Brown’s growth, lawlessness, and business savvy.

Will ‘I Feel Good’ watching Get On Up?...

The performance set pieces are the strength of Get On Up, and the performance of Nelsan Ellis as side man Bobby Byrd provides a moral compass to the film. Sometimes Brown’s character is impossible to understand, but the power of the music still resonates.
