Let’s face it. If YA novels are a metaphor for life, American high school is a dystopian dog-eat-dog society in which survival is based on discovering who you are and how your unique skills can save the whole campus. In Insurgent, high school is a futuristic Chicago, crumbling, plagued by cliques, and surrounded by a wall. In this second installment of the Divergent series, Tris (Shailene Woodley) belongs to more than one clique, and the principal, er, head of the Erudites (Kate Winslet) is after her so she can open a box. Really.

    ClearPlay In Action!

Insurgent is low on profanity – fewer than 10 instances – but ClearPlay cuts those, and a gratuitous scene of implied intercourse. There is a high level of violence in Insurgent, and ClearPlay trims the bloodier images. A favorite of the filmmakers seems to be shooting somebody in the head, but cutting away or doing it out of frame so no blood is involved. The implications of brutality make even the ClearPlayed version best suited for teens and above.

Does Theo James put the ‘gent’ in Insurgent?...

The actors, including James (as Four [!]), take themselves very seriously here. But there is so much dopey behavior in Insurgent, it’s a wonder it’s not played for laughs. The talents of award winners Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, and Naomi Watts are largely wasted, and even simple acts such as cutting hair are given Wagnerian treatment. But if you ignore the silliness, it’s an okay tweener sci-fi pic.

    Marty Nabhan, ClearPlay Indulgent

Rated PG-13 for intense violence and action throughout, some sensuality, thematic elements and brief language; 119 mins; Directed by Robert Schwentke
