Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
If titles are our first introduction to a movie, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen may have an upstream battle on its hands. It’s a shame, in that the movie is a charming tale of love and faith. In the film, because of political and public relations considerations, a fishing expert, Dr. Alfred Jones (Ewan McGregor), and a consultant (Emily Blunt) are thrown together to study the feasibility of introducing salmon into the Yemen. In the case of the Yemen, a river doesn’t run through it, one of the many obstacles presented to the Sheikh (Amr Waked) who has the initial dream of bringing his love of fishing to his people.
ClearPlay In Action!
The ClearPlayed version removes two scenes of lovemaking, some implied sex and about 30 instances of language. The subject of infidelity is broached, as are terrorism, civil unrest and murder. The subject matter is fine for most teens; you may have trouble securing an audience younger than that, as Salmon Fishing is a quiet movie about grown–up concerns.
What’s the lure to Salmon Fishing in the Yemen?…
It doesn’t matter if you don’t care about the Yemen or salmon fishing. This is a delightful story with interesting characters, a sly sense of humor, and some interesting thoughts about the power of faith. Take the bait and see the movie.
